SMILES :)

4 month shots

Yesterday we went to see Dr. Zavadil for Nolan's 4-month well baby check up. Everything looks good - YAY! He's in the 50th percentile for weight (14 1/2 lbs.) and only the 10th percentile for height (24 inches). Poor kid isn't going to be playing much basketball, that's for sure! Developmentally everything is right on track, so that's good news. It was a long wait at the doctor's office, and Nolan fell asleep between the time when the doctor left and the nurses came in to give him his shots. Talk about a rude awakening! He did really well though, but definitely a lot more screaming this time!

It's nice having the daycare and pediatrician all downtown since we both work down here, but it was a chore yesterday. By the time I got to my car, picked Nolan up, picked Brad up, got to the doctor's office, waited and waited and waited, then dropped everyone back off and got back to work, it was a 2 hour and 15 minute lunch! It's nice that my job is pretty flexible though. I can just make the time up later this week.

Here are a couple pictures we took at the doctor's office to take up some time :)

Mylanta?

Last week Nolan had his first case of really bad diaper rash. Poor little guy....I took some pictures of it, but I won't embarrass him in front of the whole world. At least not yet!

Anyway, the girls at daycare suggested putting regular Mylanta on it, with the diaper rash cream on top of that. I figured we should try it since they've seen tons of babies with diaper rash....and it worked! It coats his skin from the acid just like it does your stomach. We let him hang out with his diaper off for awhile so it could get some air too. He peed on me once and pooped on the towel we put down. Now he loves it when he gets his diaper changed....looks like we may have started a bad habit!

But just like when he had the bronchiolitis (which hasn't completely gone away yet), he's such a happy baby! This picture is last Friday night when we got home from work - he usually plays on his blanket while we're getting dinner ready. And after that we watch Wheel of Fortune every night....Nolan's a Wheel Watcher! haha

We put up his jumper seat last weekend too. He loves it! It's right by the front door, so he can look out the window while he's in there. Brinkley and Nuke like it too because he's at just the right height for them to lick him!

Our happy bronchiolitic

Yesterday was Nolan's first 'unplanned' trip to the pediatrician :(

When we left Indiana last week, he and Brad had both started coughing a little bit. Brad is almost over it, but Nolan's little body hasn't bounced back quite as quickly. Yesterday morning he had a mild fever, so I called the pediatrician's office when I got to work (after consulting with Nurse Polly/Nanny, of course!). Apparently everybody is sick, because the only appointment they had was at the end of the day. Brad called the daycare to make sure everything was okay, and Miss Erica said he was having a good day, so we decided we could wait until that afternoon to take him in. I hadn't taken him to the doctor before this because Nurse Polly/Nanny said as long as he's still eating and sleeping well, he's not too fussy, and not running a fever, he'd be okay.

Now, keep in mind that in the midst of all of these coughing spasms, Nolan is a perfectly happy baby. He doesn't even act like anything is wrong! It's so confusing and frustrating because he can't tell me what's wrong, and I feel so bad because I know it hurts when he coughs like that. But he's such a good baby....thank God he's laid back like his Daddy!

The official diagnosis is bronchiolitis. It's going around, and this year it's lasting about 2 weeks. Which is not bad compared to the 2 months they've seen in prior years. The bad thing is that there's not much we can do, but since Nolan is a 'happy bronchiolitic', we don't have the worst situation by far. Last night he was up a little more often than usual and didn't eat quite as much as usual, so we hope we're going through the worst of it right now and that by the end of the week, we'll see some improvement. As long as we can keep him eating and hydrated, we should be in good shape. He was so good letting the doctor clean out his ears and check him out. She was talking to us about everything and the whole time Nolan was just grinning at her. He's such a little flirt, even when he doesn't feel good!

Here's a link that I found today that tells a little bit more about it. Let's hope that Nolan doesn't get the asthma genes from his Daddy, since that's more common in kids who have had bronchiolitis.

On the upside, we got a weight check while we were there too - Nolan's up to 14 lbs. 5 oz.!

So a few more sleepless nights are inevitably in store for us, but I know we're not the first ones (or the last) to go through it. We're just thankful that it's not a severe case and that Nolan seems to be happy most of the time. That makes our job much easier!

Feb. 8 - Surprise!

Brad thought we were in for a lazy Friday night at home, but I had other plans!! He had mentioned a few weeks ago about wanting to go back up to Black Hawk/Central City. It's about an hour away, and they have a bunch of casinos/hotels built right into the mountains. We hadn't been there for a long time, so I decided that I would surprise him for Valentine's Day. I LOVE to plan things, so this was right up my alley! I had been scheming for almost 3 weeks to make it work. Let me tell you, this would have been far easier back before we were parents!

I arranged for Grandma Cindy to pick Nolan up from daycare and take him for the night. She also ran to our house and grabbed the dogs. (See, it's really like I have 3 babies....4 if you count Brad!) Brad went to play poker with his friends last Wednesday night, so it was the perfect time for me to pack a bag for him. I knew that he would be oblivious to his 'missing' clothes, so that part was a piece of cake. I just had to make it through the next two days without spilling the beans! Thursday night I successfully loaded the bags in the trunk without him knowing....I was so scared he'd catch me that I was shaking when I came back inside! I had even packed up Nolan's diaper bag to leave for Cindy and he didn't even notice. Friday morning went well.....I just had to make sure I got to the paper at daycare before he did so I could write that Grandma was picking him up. By the time I got to work that day, I was so proud of myself for not telling him my big secret that I couldn't stop smiling! I even made it to the ATM that day without him knowing.

I showed up in his lobby to wait for him, and he thought I was working in a conference room for the afternoon. He called my cell phone to say he was ready to go (we carpool every day) and I told him I'd be waiting in the usual spot. The look on his face when he came around the corner was priceless!! He was so confused....I told him I had a surprise and he asked if it was good news. His co-worker Jessica was with him, and she asked if I was pregnant!! Now, I don't know about you, but to me that would NOT be good news to someone who has a 4-month old!! haha He was definitely surprised, and I couldn't have been happier! We had a great time, even though we came back with less money than we started out with. We slept for almost 10 hours - it was great!! But the next day we were ready to come home and see our little man.....we missed him!

Here's a view of Black Hawk when you come around the corner of the mountain (we stayed at the Isle of Capri, first on the left):

Frequent flyer

Too bad you can't get frequent flyer miles for babies that sit in your lap! Nolan took his second flight to Indiana last weekend. We got lucky on the way out and had the whole row to ourselves again. He was pretty good, but I could definitely tell a difference from when we flew in December. He doesn't just sleep all the time like he used to! It helped that the flight was at his bedtime, so he ended up sleeping most of the way. My parents picked us up, and it was a late night for everyone - we didn't get back to Terre Haute until around 1:30am. But that's how it goes with the 2-hour time change!

My mom had surgery a few weeks ago, so she wasn't able to pick Nolan up or put him down, she could only hold him when someone else handed him to her. Needless to say, Nolan got spoiled a lot by Nanny this weekend!

Saturday morning we went down to Clay City to see everyone. We watched some guitar hero performances at Ryan's house, and then went to Cary's to hang out for awhile. The kids definitely love Nolan....but I think Mackenzie loves him most! She is still quite the mother hen :)

Saturday afternoon we visited with my friend Susan, her husband Alex, and 3 1/2 year-old Kaitlyn. Susan and I went to Franklin College together. We don't get to see each other that often, so it was really nice to spend some time together. They are expecting baby #2 on April 9, so Kaitlyn got some good big sister practice time in with Nolan!

My cousin Lisa stopped by to visit too. She's a HUGE Colts fan, so Brad had to let her know that both times Nolan has worn his Colts outfit, he's either spit up on it or pooped all over it! He loves telling that story....

Granny Ruth and her daughter Erin (who used to babysit me too!) stopped by with Erin's kids, Ryley, 5, and Liam. Liam is a few months older than Nolan, so they were checking each other out! (I'm working on getting a picture of the boys together that Erin took, so I'll post it later.)

The rest of the weekend we spent just hanging out at Nanny & Papa's with everyone. Nolan got to try out the jumper seat and absolutely loved it! We'll have to get ours out at home this week for him to sit in. He does such a good job of holding his head up!

The biggest news of the weekend came Monday morning.....Nolan rolled over for the first time! He kept getting to his side from his back and then quitting. My mom kept saying it would only be a few more days before he would get it. Then Monday morning, I was drying my hair and Nanny got a phone call, so I went downstairs because Nolan was fussing around a little. He was just laying on the floor playing, and we were talking, and all of a sudden he did it! Mom came over after she got off the phone and saw him pulling his little arm out....he was so proud of himself! Brad was in the shower, so of course I ran up to tell him. We haven't had a repeat yet, but I know it's just a matter of time before he's rolling all over the place!

We had a great time getting to see everyone and relax for a few days. It's always hard to leave my friends and family, but I really believe that absence does make the heart grow fonder. We'll get to see my parents again in April when they come out to Colorado for a few days....after tax season, of course!
